I bought this classic old Nikkor-P 105mm f/2.5 lens on eBay from former Playboy photographer Robert Scott Hooper. Hooper used to shoot Playmates with this lens, and he threw in a signed, uncirculated copy of September 1977 Playboy that included his award-winning pictoral of Debra Jo Fondren, shot with this lens. She went on to become Playmate of the Year. The lens itself has a long and successful history, and has been loved by photographers for more than 50 years. First launched in 1959 as a pre-AI lens, it underwent various changes until around 1990, but the optics remained the same. In 1977, Nikon launched the new Ai (Automatic Indexing) lenses, and at the same time it offered to upgrade older lenses to AI. This is one such pre-AI lens factory upgraded to AI by Nikon. Many other old copies of the lens have been crudely upgraded to AI by do-it-yourselfers. The lens gained great reputation for its sharpness and for its smooth "bokeh" (out-of-focus background blur). They still work beautifully with todays Nikon DSLRs, though they must be manually focused.

 

Debra Jo Fondren is an American model and actress. She was chosen as Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Month for the September 1977 issue, and as the 1978 Playmate of the Year. Her original pictorial was photographed by Robert Scott Hooper.

A favorite of many photographers thanks to her remarkably long blonde hair, which fell past her knees, she enjoyed a small measure of success in Hollywood, with small guest star roles on a number of TV series, such as Pink Lady and Jeff and Fantasy Island.

Debra faded from public view for much of the 1980s, and at one point she became a born-again Christian. However, she resumed modeling for Playboy in the mid-1990s, her hair then shoulder-length and red. She also appeared in the memorable Playboy home video Playmates in Paradise, cavorting with models 15 years her junior. She attended several Glamourcon events in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Today, she no longer participates in Playboy promotions because they place "too much emphasis on sex."1 In 2004, citing personal and financial reasons, she shut down her personal website, listed below.
